Brick repointing

Pointing is the technical term for the material that joins bricks and stones together in the construction of a building. If this pointing get worn away or damaged, it can let unwanted water into the property, or threaten the structural integrity of the wall. Repointing brickwork repairs the damaged mortar or cement, restoring the wall to its former condition.

Lime mortar pointing

While modern buildings use cement for their pointing, heritage buildings and listed buildings were often constructed using lime mortar. When repointing brickwork on historic buildings, we revert to the older lime mortar pointing to prevent chemical damage to the original stones, bricks, and surrounding mortar.

Tuck pointing

Tuck pointing uses two different-coloured mortars to join the brickwork together, one of which matches the surrounding bricks. The effect produced is that of a very thin layer of supporting mortar between each layer of bricks. Tuck pointing requires specialist tools (tuck pointing irons), and the attention of an expert in repointing brickwork.
